adspiration

I love well thought out advertising and innovative marketing. There's something so inspiring and creative about them- whether they be smart or sporty car ads (like this Ford commercial that I saw today), beautiful perfume ads, great beauty ads, funny beer ads or even something a bit more mundane as supermarket advertising.

the celebrity solution

It seems like the standard celebrity solution, the one-size-fits-all solution, to all problems is that when in doubt, go sue the other party. This time, it's Paris Hilton suing celeb photog Bingo Rimér because some of his film footage, from his time spent in her house, has somehow found its way into the new Treadstone single 'Six Feet Under'. I'm not saying it's either wrong or right, but rather that this news reporting gets tiring. 'Such-and-such-famous-person sues whoever', 'Some-other-famous-person files a lawsuit against another-somebody'. Sigh.

Bet you the Swedish band is loving the free publicity though!I expect the number of views for their MV to skyrocket as more people find out about this.

playtime with chanel

Beautiful bags and boxes further entrench my love for shopping. For example, Lane Crawford shopping beats David Jones any day, if for nothing other than the lovely stiff cardboard carry bags you get. The ones from DJs are flimsy nothings, even if they have now re-enforced the handles so it doesn't get completely mutilated as soon as you pick them up.

laced and masked

Going to my friend's mask party on Saturday and I'm planning on making it black and lacey, in honor of Audrey Hepburn's 'How to Steal a Million' and all the face gear I've seen on the runways and in editorials over the past few seasons.
(tumblr, fashiontitbits)

Well, it was either lace... or ripping apart a pair of blk fishnets and pulling it over my face semi- burglar style- probably not the greatest runway-to-reality look in the world. Surprisingly, as I try on my creation... having lace over eyes is not nearly as much a vision impairment as I would have thought. And I can use it as a headband if I feel entirely too awkward with it on, or if no one is abiding by the masked theme!

The Kevin Julia debacle has the whole world reeling, but Ikea has the solution. After all, the Swedes know best!

nothing quite like a holiday

Winter break is finally here! Six weeks of absolute nothingness, after crazy study sessions and late night assessment rushes... it couldn't have come any sooner! I've got plans-

(SMH)

Being nocturnal and operating off the FIFA world cup schedule, temporarily being a lady of leisure (minus the inherited money), going shopping, training for my first City2Surf, finishing my huge photo/scrapbook album from exchange last semester (which is of course taking forever), start studying for the GMAT, catching up on my mega reading list whilst curled up in bed/ the couch with a mug of coffee, dessert meet-ups with close friends.

I suppose I should also go job and summer internship hunting now that I have the time, but it does feel so good to be able to just breathe without worrying about the schedule sometimes... (will get around to it eventually!)

spontaneity

(TFS)

Outtakes from 'Meet me at the corner' i-D Summer 2010. Everyone talks about summer flings but what about a wonderful winter romance? Why does everyone choose summer > winter anyway?

rain, hail or shine

(thesartorialist)

I've had enough of the torrential rainy wet weather in Sydney these last few weeks. Especially after one of my feet got entirely submerged in a big puddle on the university campus- soaked to the bones and wet as a dog! After making a deal with myself that if it rained that heavily again... I'd get myself I'd invest in some nice Wellingtons, and since it did yesterday- the classic olive Hunters I've been eyeing for at least two years have been justified! Tried them on when in London in January this year but no room in my luggage! This seems like a good enough excuse for such an extravagant buy (for rubber boots after all). That and um... the Queen Mum and the late Princess Di wore them?

But then again... I want to attain a certain return on investment- what's the likelihood of more bad wet winter weather for the rest of the season (especially when Australia is still in a drought)? Oh, decisions decisions. Maybe I should go off and conduct a statistical analysis to weigh up my probability...

planned winter acquisitions

(style.com, stockholmstreetstyle, Acne, mamasarollingstone)

Burgundy lipstick to achieve wine stained lips; Black leather shorts; Shearling aviator jacket (hopefully when I go vintage shopping)... even though it's might not totally suit Sydney weather; A tea-length skirt with a 50s vibe (vintage too?) à la Louis Vuitton FW10; classic everyday knee length black leather boots with a comfortable medium heel (the Acne Pistol 1 tall boot is a potential candidate); dove grey matte eyeshadow; a pair of biker boots after I threw out my great budget pair from Skopunkten (Jeffrey Campell 'Brit'? Frye 'Engineer'? hmmm...).

flip side of the coin

(facebook, TFS)

Summer for the world at large, winter wonderland for the land down under. After living in Sweden and Europe for six months, I very much wish Sydney was the kind of place that snowed and actually got cold. I have a love affair with coats and scarves and boots and all those glorious winter accessories!

alejandro

(Lady Gaga - Alejandro on Vimeo)

Lady Gaga's new MV. Can't decide if I love it or hate it, even though it's directed by Steven Klein. The overt sexuality appeals in a strange and kinky sort of way, but then I'm not so sure about the religious tones. Burgundy lipstick love. And some of those moves in the synchronized scene towards the end looks similar to some of the core conditioning tracks from Les Mills and Fitness First that I do at the gym!

stealth wealth (keep it hidden)

(TFS, altamiranyc)
Apparently on the rise as the fashion world waves goodbye to the 80s, the shoulder pads and generally OTT influence of Balmain, stealth wealth is "about accoutrements that are subtle, not necessarily readble by the general public but by those in the know". So... understated elegance in a nutshell. That's not unlike the French take on style and appearance, no? Being made up, yet with just the right touch of nonchalance, to look like you're in the money.

Thank you mama for making this into a key part of my philosophy, although I was ungrateful and didn't understand this concept in my teenage years-
No monogrammed anything... ever;
Quality trumps quantity every time;
It's all in the details, and the subtleties;
Less is always more, regardless of what anyone is saying;
and that the classic 'investment pieces' will forever transcend time.

Not to say I don't like my trends and my chain stores (they can be life savers, being on a student budget and all...), but the trendiness of an item should be inversely proportional to the price (i.e. The more trendy it is, the lower its longevity and hence, the less I want to pay for it). I'm glad I seem to be following these basic guidelines, because its got me thinking even more about the nuances and my wardrobe is very slowly starting to attain a sense of timelessness. After all... like that Russh article said, what I really want is to be showing off by not showing off.

'Makayla', my new heels from Country Road- black, leather and criss- cross leather straps... no wonder I love them. These were worth the effort of waking up early to check out the start of the stocktake sale.
